Tuqa Jirmo
Tuqa has a long career in conservation with equally matching wealth of experience that spans over 27 years.
He is currently working with The Nature Conservancy (TNC) as program Lead for Western Indian Ocean – covering ocean biodiversity conservation, community led conservation and IP&LC, Marine ecosystem, and ocean planning, building partnerships for conservation, project management and strengthening blue economy in the region.
Tuqa also worked at Lewa Wildlife Conservancy as Chief operations officer while as COO he supported many conservation projects such as IL Ngwesi Community Conservancy Black Rhino project, reintroduction of Mountain Bongo and Black Rhinos into Mt Kenya, water, schools, conservation agriculture and women micro-enterprise among others
Tuqa began his career in conservation some decades ago at Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) where he served for 25 years. He served as head of many conservation units and Kenyan National Parks, namely Meru, Amboseli, Tsavo, Samburu, Narok/Mau Forest, and Malindi and Watamu Marine among others. While at KWS he also led community wildlife service as partnership officer for both terrestrial and marine protected areas. He also served in conservation education and wildlife protection departments.
Tuqa holds a Ph.D in Conservation Biology from Leiden University (Institute of Environmental Sciences) (CML) – Netherlands, MSc in Biology of conservation from University of Nairobi and a BSc in Wildlife Management from Moi University Kenya.
